Shoulder Pain

What is shoulder pain?

Your shoulder is a complex joint formed by bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. This complex anatomy creates a flexible joint that has a wide range of motion.

When you develop shoulder pain, it can be due to any of the structures making up this part of your body or because of issues in other parts of your body, like spinal stenosis where your spinal canal puts pressure on a nerve.

What causes shoulder pain?

While there are many issues that cause shoulder pain, the most common include:

While there are several types of arthritis conditions, the most prevalent form that causes shoulder pain is osteoarthritis. This degenerative disease usually comes on slowly because of overuse, injury, or natural wear-and-tear.

Injured tendons

Your tendons work to attach your muscles to your bones. When you injure a tendon, it’s usually the result of overuse. Other causes of tendon injury include tendonitis and tendon tears.

If you have tendonitis, your tendon gradually wears down. When you have a tendon tear, you usually experience a traumatic injury that rips the tissue in two.

This type of pain occurs when the fluid-filled sacs in your shoulder joint known as bursae grow inflamed and swell. This condition often accompanies rotator cuff tendonitis.

Referred pain

This common cause of shoulder pain develops when you have an injury in another location of your body. Common causes of referred shoulder pain include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease affecting your upper spine or neck.

When you have referred pain, it’s usually constant and isn’t affected by motion. If you have a tendon injury or arthritis, your shoulder pain usually worsens with movement.
